I was so excited to do this project! I feel like laundry rooms lend themselves to casual creativity, and I wanted mine to be a bright spot. As with most of my home decor, I wanted this space to feel personal and reflective of me and my family. Months later, I’m still giddy about how it turned out!

When I started to think about how I wanted my poo-brown laundry room to transform, I immediately envisioned some type of wallpaper.
It’s a small space that I walk by everyday, and I literally wanted it to make me smile every time I saw it. Shouldn’t that be a prerequisite for anything we put in our homes? Anyways, I digress… I took to Pinterest for some inspiration and stumbled across this image with peach wallpaper.
I absolutely loved the aesthetic! Peaches remind me of warm weather and childhood trips to my great grandma’s house in Amish country. Now that I had a mental picture of what I wanted for the space, I went to work making it my own. And by “I went to work,” I mean, my hubby went to work. 😂 I was newly pregnant when we started this space, so he painted over the poo-brown walls with bright white to give me a clean slate.
He also installed these fresh-looking, stick-on vinyl tiles to cover the boring, dark cream tile already in the space.
I figured that floor-to-ceiling peaches might be too busy, so we installed bead-board with chair rail to give the space a more grounded and custom feel. We are not by any means DIY experts, so we followed this tutorial by the Home Depot and found it to be thorough and helpful. There is something about bead-board in a laundry room that feels homey to me. When this went up, it felt like one more personal touch that made this house our home.
The peach decals in the Pinterest picture were beautiful, but would run me over $200 to cover my walls (about 2/3 of my budget 😳). A quick Amazon search later, and I found these decals which are pretty, cost-effective, and renter friendly. Not only that, but they went on like a dream. I just had to peel and stick as opposed to having everything lined up perfectly with wallpaper.
Next, was onto the shelves. Decorating shelves is probably my favorite thing to do when it comes to home decor! I love to mix and match and move items until it looks just how I want. Since there was so much white in the room already, I didn’t want to do a basic white shelf. I’m partial to how rustic wood looks against a lot of white and clean lines, so I chose these from Walmart for our space. And I really liked the brackets, too. They added the pop of black I think every room needs.
On the top shelf, I placed OXO containers for my powdered laundry soap. I like that it’s out of reach for little ones, and it looks nicer than a big plastic bottle. On the bottom shelf, I got a trailing faux plant from Target. I try to use real plants whenever possible, but this room doesn’t have a window. It took some diligent searching, but in the end I felt like this one looked real and it added the texture and color I liked from my inspiration picture.
Across the bottom shelf is a marble votive holder. I picked it up at HomeGoods a few years back, and it had been in my decor closet since we moved. I dig that it added another natural material to add interest to the space. And I just love it when I successfully shop my own house for the perfect piece!
Lastly, I put a trio of small glass containers with complimentary colors on display. Two of them are essential oils that I drop on dryer balls some of the time when drying blankets and such.
In the end, I’m incredibly happy with the turnout of this room! With a weekend and about $300, we were able to make an ordinary space into something that is meaningful and cheery. It might not make doing laundry much easier, but it’s certainly more of a bright spot in my day than it was before!
