I wanted to do something different than balloons or confetti for our second baby’s gender reveal. The idea of a layered cookie with a colored sprinkle explosion came to mind and became the winner! It turned out to be such a fun way to involve our family in celebrating our little one!

One of the most nerve-wracking things for me to do is to keep a secret everyone wants to know. 😅
Wylan and I found out the gender of both our babies before revealing to our families. We had to wait about 5 days between ultrasound and party for Callie, and I was exhausted by the time we revealed. It’s just so hard not to shout it from the rooftops once you know! We opted to have the party the day after the ultrasound this time and, thank goodness, I fared much better.
Anyways, onto the main event. The cookies! The first thing I recommend doing is picking out a cookie cutter. You can get all types of cute baby-themed cutters like this onesie, but I wanted to use something I already had on hand, so used a hexagon shape. Keep in mind that you’ll be making quite a few and will need to cut a hole in the middle of some, so more simple shapes are easier.
You’ll also need pink and blue sprinkles (or just one for the inside if you don’t decorate the top). You’ll need more of your gender specific color to fill the cookies.
I found my go-to gluten-free cutout cookie recipe when we made cookies around Christmastime, so I used that recipe for these cookies, too. The biggest factor for the cookies to have optimum taste and texture is using a good-quality flour. Bob’s Red Mill is my standing favorite at the moment after trying quite a few different brands.
Break Apart Gender Reveal Cookies
Course: DessertDifficulty: Medium7
servings1
hourIngredients
- Cookies
Sprinkles of your choice
- Icing
2 cups confectioners sugar
1-2T milk
Directions
- Prepare cookie dough according to instructions.
- Roll out dough. You don’t want it to be too thick because you’ll have three layers. I found using these rolling pin spacers helped me achieve even and thin results.
- Once you have the dough rolled, start cookie cutting! Keep in mind that you will need a top, bottom, and middle peice with a hole cut out for every break apart cookie.
- Bake the cookies in batches according to the instructions.
- While the cookies are baking, make the icing. Simply whisk the confectioners sugar and milk together (start with 1T of milk) until you get something that’s a little thicker than glue.
- Using an offset spatula or piping bag, decorate your cookie tops with icing and sprinkles to your hearts content. Then, using a piping bag, pipe a ring completely around the perimeter of the bottom cookie. Place the middle cookie on that, add your gender reveal sprinkles, ice another complete ring around the middle cookie, and finish with the top cookie.
- Allow to dry for at least two hours to set completely before the big reveal!

Notes
- I estimate that one batch of the cookie recipe makes about 7-8 finished cookies, depending on the size of your cutter. Double or triple accordingly.
